The First Lady of the Republic, Mrs.Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has released a statement concerning recommendations recently made by the Prof.Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee, which seek to regularise payment of allowances to spouses of the current President and Vice President, former Heads of State, President and Vice Presidents, respectively, as part of the privileges due the President and Vice President under Article 71 of the constitution.
The approval of the Presidential spouse emoluments by Parliament generated so much conversation in the country with the majority opposing to this recommendation. It is manifest that the negative opinions outweighed the positives.
In view of this, the First Lady, in consultation with the President of the Republic, has decided to refund all monies paid her as allowances from 2017 up to date, amounting to GHc899,097.84.
The First Lady has also decided to reject any monies that have been allocated to her per the recommendations of the Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee, as approved by Parliament.
